REU 2023 at Cornell University: Astrophysics and Planetary Science

The Department of Astronomy of Cornell University is pleased to announce its 2023 Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program.

Students will work on individual research projects with Cornell faculty and research staff on a wide range of topics in planetary science, exoplanets, design, building and testing novel cameras and superconducting detectors, spacecraft propulsion, cosmic explosions, fast radio bursts as probes of the intergalactic medium and pulsars to search for gravitational waves.

Students will participate in a series of group activities including lectures, roundtables and workshops and one or two field trips.

Tentative program dates, to be confirmed by February 28, 2023, are Monday, June 5 to Friday, August 11, 2023. Dates may be adjusted for conflict with students’ academic schedules.

Completed applications AND supporting materials must be received by February 3, 2023 at 5 pm EST.

For each participant, a stipend of $6,000.00 will be provided for the ten week session, plus $1,250.00 for housing and meals as well as up to $800.00 towards the cost of travel to and from Ithaca and $1,000.00 towards the cost of travel for observation or other research-related activities, or a professional meeting. Eligible expenses include travel, meals, lodging, meeting registration and preparation of presentation materials.

To be eligible, undergraduate students must be US citizens or permanent residents. Eligible candidates must have completed at least one year of undergraduate academic training by June 2023 and will graduate at or after the end of the 2023 fall semester or quarter at their school. Up to ten Research Assistantships will be available.

Astronomy, astrophysics, planetary science, physics, geophysics, computer science and engineering students are encouraged to apply.

REU projects offer an opportunity to tap the nation’s diverse student talent pool and broaden participation in science and engineering. Women, underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities, veterans and other non-traditional students are encouraged to apply.

Currently we anticipate and look forward to normal in-person participation, with appropriate Covid precautions as required by the University and the State of New York. Applicants must be aware, however, that the possibility of remote participation cannot be fully ruled out.
